James Crow

James Crow is a British archaeologist .

Crow studied Ancient and Medieval History at the University of Birmingham with Anthony Bryer and Philipp Rahtz . He then studied Provincial Roman and Byzantine archeology with Martin Harrison at Newcastle University . Here he received his doctorate with a thesis on late Roman fortifications on the lower Danube.

He then became a Research Fellow at the British Institute at Ankara and was excavation director for the National Trust on Hadrian's Wall from 1982 to 1989 . From 1989–90 he was a lecturer in ancient history and archeology at the University of Warwick . From 1990 to 2007 he was a lecturer in archeology at Newcastle University. Since 2007 he has been Professor of Archeology at the University of Edinburgh .

His research areas include the vast area of ​​the Roman provinces from Britain to Asia Minor , such as the late Roman border in Northeast Asia Minor and the Balkans, as well as on Hadrian's Wall. In the field of Byzantine archeology, he was mainly active with his surveys on the Anastasius Wall (1994-2000) and the water supply of Constantinople (2000-2005).
