James F. Crow
James Franklin Crow (born January 18, 1916 in Phoenixville near Valley Forge , Pennsylvania, † January 3, 2012 in Madison , Wisconsin) was an American geneticist and professor of genetics and zoology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison .
Life
Crow earned a bachelor's degree in biology and chemistry from Friends University in Wichita, Kansas in 1937 and a Ph.D. in 1941 from JT Patterson and WS Stone at the University of Texas. in zoology . Before moving to the University of Wisconsin in 1948, he gave courses in parasitology, hematology, mathematics, and statistics at Dartmouth College . In 1954 he received a full professorship at the University of Wisconsin. After his retirement in 1986, he stayed at this university.
Crow was married and had three children.
Act
Crow was considered an authority on population genetics , human genetics, and genetic radiation effects . He successfully introduced mathematical models into the study of human inheritance and, using Drosophila, studied the effect of lethal factors on the genetics of populations. Other contributions concerned the genetic load , the random sampling of genes in small populations or the assessment of the degree of inbreeding using similarities in surnames as markers for the influence of mutations on genetic disorders in humans.
Crow was the associate editor of Genetics magazine from 1952 to 1957 and president of the Genetics Society of America (GSA) in 1960 . Crow was awarded the GSA's Thomas Hunt Morgan Medal for Lifetime Achievement in 1978 .
Crow was a member of the National Academy of Sciences (1961), the National Academy of Medicine , the American Philosophical Society (1966), the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1966), a Foreign Member of the Royal Society (2001) and an honorary member of the Japanese Academy of the sciences . The University of Chicago and the University of Edinburgh awarded him an honorary doctorate. Crow has served as a leading member of numerous commissions, including the National Academy of Sciences, the National Institutes of Health, and the National Institutes of Justice , particularly on topics related to genetic risk assessment of ionizing radiation . Crow was chairman of the genetics department of the first United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR).
At the University of Wisconsin – Madison there has been a JF Crow Institute for the Study of Evolution since 2009 . The director is (as of 2016) Nicole Perna .
