James Edgar Dandy (born September 24, 1903 in Preston , Lancashire , † November 10, 1976 in Tring ) was an English botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Dandy ".

Life

After studying at Preston Grammar School and Downing College in Cambridge, Dandy was 1925-1927 assistant at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew with John Hutchinson . In 1927 he moved to the British Museum in London . From 1956 to 1966 he was "Keeper" of the Department of Botany at the Natural History Museum in London . Dandy's specialty was the magnolia family (Magnoliaceae) and the genus of spawning herbs ( Potamogeton ). But he was also particularly familiar with the areas of taxonomy and older botanical literature. He has often helped clarify taxonomic questions from colleagues, but has therefore published less of his own work. The primary goal was the stability of the nomenclature. He was also involved in the problems of the nomenclature of Flora Europaea and the index nominum genericorum . His most important own work was the Index of generic names of vascular plants 1753–1774 , which was published in 1967. In 1966, Dandy retired.
