James Oglethorpe
James Edward Oglethorpe (born December 22, 1696 in London , † June 30, 1785 in Cranham , England ) was a British general and philanthropist . He founded the Georgia colony , which later became today's US state of Georgia .
life and work
Oglethorpe brought the first English colonists to Savannah in 1733 . He hired Mary Musgrove to act for him as an interpreter and mediator with the Greek to ensure peaceful cooperation in land settlement and trade. From 1732 to 1743 he acted as the representative of the trustees for the establishment of the Georgia Colony ( Trustees for Establishing the Colony of Georgia in America ). He is considered the first governor of the colony , although he never held that title . According to him, these are Oglethorpe County , Georgia and Oglethorpe University in Atlanta named.
