James G. Stewart
James "Jim" Graham Stewart (born May 21, 1907 in Homewood , Pennsylvania , † March 22, 1997 in Los Angeles , Hollywood ) was an American film technician who won an Oscar in 1949 for best visual effects in the film Jenny (1948 ) won.
Life
Stewart began his career as a film technician in Hollywood's film industry in 1933 as a sound assistant on the comedy Double Harness by John Cromwell and participated in the making of around 90 films.
At the Oscar ceremony in 1943 he was the first time for an Oscar nomination for best visual effects, along with the photographer Vernon L. Walker for the war drama The fleet breaks through (OT: The Navy Comes Through) (1942) by A. Edward Sutherland . In 1944 , along with VL Walker and Roy Granville, another nomination for the Oscar for best visual effects in the war drama Irrespective of Losses (1943) by Richard Wallace . At the subsequent Academy Awards in 1945 Stewart was again nominated for the Oscar for Best Visual Effects with VL Walker and R. Granville, this time for the romantic war drama Days of Glory (1944) by Jacques Tourneur .
He won the Oscar for the best visual effects together with Paul Eagler , J. McMillan Johnson , Russell Shearman , Clarence Slifer and Charles L. Freeman in 1949 for the film Jennie - The Portrait of a Love (1948), a fantasy film by William Dieterle .
He also worked as a film technician in films such as Citizen Kane (1941) by Orson Welles , The Splendor of the House of Amberson (1942) by O. Welles and The Bells of St. Mary (1945) by Leo McCarey . In 1991 he was still involved as a sound recorder in the making of the comedy LA Story by Mick Jackson .
As a film technician, he did pioneering work in the field of so-called re-recording , a system in which singers, musicians or ensembles are recorded several times in succession and the subsequent mixing of the recordings creates the impression of a larger sound apparatus.
