James McDougal Hart (born May 10, 1828 in Kilmarnock , Strathclyde , Scotland, † October 24, 1901 in Brooklyn , New York) was a Scottish-American painter of the Düsseldorf School .

Life

James McDougal Hart was the brother of William Hart and worked with his brother in Albany, New York for several years as a car painter. In the years 1850 to 1853 (according to more recent research, however, in 1851 and 1852) he was a student of the landscape painter Johann Wilhelm Schirmer in Düsseldorf , from whom he not only learned the thorough study of nature, the depth of perspective staggered landscape structure and the preference for the detailed realistic depiction of large Trees took over, but also his romantic view of the landscape as a carrier of feelings . Like the “painter poet” Schirmer, he achieved a “refined naturalism” by striving for a composition in the reproduction of nature that combined beautiful lines with formal and color balance, following the example of the classical landscape painting by Claude Lorrain and Jacob van Ruisdael .

Before returning to the United States, he stayed in Munich for a while . In 1856, after living in Albany again for a few years, he settled in New York, where he painted very successful landscapes with cattle scenery, which were also influenced by the Hudson River School and Luminism .

The following are to be mentioned:

  • The returning cattle
  • The moon rise in the Adirondac Mountains
  • A forest in autumn
  • A Sunday afternoon in Berkshire
  • Peaceful Homeland (1872)
  • The orchard
  • Indian summer
  • Summer in Berkshire

In 1859 he was elected a member ( NA ) of the National Academy of Design in New York .
