James Harvey Robinson

James Harvey Robinson (born June 29, 1863 in Bloomington , Illinois , † February 16, 1936 in New York City ) was an American historian, president of the US Association of Historians for several years and founding rector of New York's " The New School " -University.

Live and act

The son of a bank director initially worked briefly in his father's bank, but then in 1884 he chose to study history at Harvard University . After completing his master's degree in 1888, he continued his studies at the universities of Freiburg / Breisgau and Strasbourg. His Dr. phil. he obtained in 1890 at the University of Freiburg . Robinson then taught history with a focus on European history, first as an assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania (1891–95) and then as a full professor at Columbia University (1895–1919).

In 1919 he co-founded the New York School for Social Research and became its first president. He is also considered to be the founder of the “New History” school, which propagated historiography based on social science. As editor of the Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science (1892-95), he earned merit as well as co-editor of the American Historical Review (1912-20) and President (1929) of the American Historical Association .

In his honor, the American Historians Association has been awarding the James Harvey Robinson Prize for an Outstanding Teaching Aid every two years since 1978 for groundbreaking achievements in didactic advancement for academic historians training.
