Asher came from a Jewish family who converted in 1810. His parents were Ludewig Matthias Asher (* 1769 in Lübben ), businessman and banker in Hamburg, and Anna Mariane Hedwig Philipson (* around 1772 in Altona), granddaughter of Alexander David .

Asher began his training with Gerdt Hardorff (1769–1864), who gave drawing lessons at the Patriotic Society , and with Leo Lehmann (1782–1859), Rudolf Lehmann's father . From 1821 he studied at the Academy in Dresden together with other Hamburg artists such as Carl Julius Milde , Julius Oldach and Hans Heinrich Porth , with whom he had a lifelong friendship and whom he portrayed in 1828. Even Ernst Ferdinand Oehme and Ernst Rietschel belonged to the circle. Then Asher went to the Düsseldorf Academy under Peter Cornelius . He went to Munich with Cornelius in 1825 and assisted him in painting the Glyptothek .

After a stay in Hamburg, where, among other things, he designed the large Philippi tomb in the Ohlsdorf cemetery , he went on a study trip to Italy with his friend and artist colleague Erwin Speckter for three years from 1832 . In 1838/39 he made another trip to Italy together with Wilhelm Kaulbach , who had a strong influence on him. Conversely, Asher was also an intimate critic of Kaulbach. His works hang in the Kunsthalle Hamburg , as well as museums in Lübeck and Stockholm . In 1879 an exhibition took place in Hamburg. He was also a member of the Hamburg Artists' Association from 1832 .

His brother was the doctorate lawyer and publicist Carl Wilhelm Asher . His great niece was the portrait painter Helene von der Leyen .
