Leo Lehmann (born March 16, 1782 in Hamburg ; † March 24, 1859 there ) was a German portrait painter , miniature painter , lithographer and drawing teacher .

Life

Leo Lehmann initially learned from the painters Fick and Martin Ferdinand Quadal , a Viennese painter who was in Hamburg in the 1790s, then from the miniature painter Pierre-Louis Bouvier , who was in Hamburg from 1795 to 1801. In Berlin , Friedrich Georg Weitsch had personal influence on his painting and further training, and later also Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein . For a time he wavered between painting and music, since he had trained to be a capable violinist under Andreas Romberg's direction . But thanks to the many commissions he received, he became a well-known portrait painter in Hamburg, who specialized in miniatures, but also created portraits in watercolor or with pastel chalk , sepia or silver pen and later also lithographed his portraits. He taught his two sons Henri Lehmann and Rudolf Lehmann as well as Louis Asher and gave drawing lessons in wealthy families who wanted to prepare their offspring for an artistic career; so did Ferdinand David , who then decided on music and became a famous violinist. William Bottomley and Christian Wilhelm Lüdert (1790–1857) were also his students.

In the Hamburg address book of 1798, Leo Lehmann is entered in the Hamburg address books for the first time, with the address Hütten 73 in Hamburg-Neustadt , which means that he had his studio there as early as 1797. In 1812 he moved to the street Kohlhöfen 90. During the siege of Hamburg under Marshal Louis-Nicolas d'Avoût , his wife stayed in Kiel , where on April 18, 1814 she gave birth to the eldest son Heinrich (Henri). Since Leo Lehmann absolutely wanted to be close by, he managed to deceive the French guards at a Hamburg city gate by disguised as a worker and pushing a loaded cart in front of him. Soon afterwards he was also in Kiel.

After the siege, in 1814, he moved to Krayenkamp 233. In the Hamburg address book of 1815, miniature painters as well as teachers are entered for the first time . In the summer of 1819 Leo Lehmann and his family rented an apartment in Ottensen , but his studio was still in Krayenkamp . From 1826 his studio was on Alten Wall 86 in Hamburg-Altstadt , from 1833 on Alten Wall 64. In the early morning hours of May 6, 1842, the great fire reached the house on Alten Wall 64, where he lived and worked, and destroyed it it. He then set up a new studio at ABC-Strasse 30 in Hamburg-Neustadt, but lived in Ottensen. From 1846 he had his studio at Neue ABC-Straße 16. In the Hamburg address book from 1848 the address of the family's country house, Fontenay 4 in Hamburg-Rotherbaum, is given, where they also had a servant, with the addition: Orders Neue ABC- Straße 16, 1850 with the addition: Orders Fuhlentwiete 70 and 1853 with the addition: Orders ABC-Straße 31. In 1854 Leo Lehman had his studio at Fehlandstraße 13, from 1855 to May 1, 1856 Große Bleichen 50 and from 1. May Esplanade 58b. In 1857 he moved to Esplanade 32b, where he lived until your death.
