James Henry Lane

James Henry Lane (born July 28, 1833 in Matthews , Virginia , † September 21, 1907 in Auburn , Alabama ) was a university professor and general of the Southern United States in the Civil War . He is the founder of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University .

Life

Antebellum

Lane was born in Mathews Court House, Virginia , Mathews County and graduated from the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) in 1854. In 1857 he received a Masters degree from the University of Virginia . He was a math professor at VMI and later professor of natural philosophy at the North Carolina Military Institute until the beginning of the Civil War.

Civil war

Lane joined the Confederate Army as a major and served in the 1st North Carolina Infantry Regiment from May 11, 1861. Other promotions soon followed. He became a colonel and in command of the 28th North Carolina Infantry Regiment . He was wounded twice in the Seven Day Battle of 1862. He served in Major General AP Hills Division of Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson's Second Corps during the Second Battle of the Bull Run and then led a brigade after Brigadier General Lawrence O'Bryan Branch was killed in the Battle of Antietam . On November 1, 1862, Lane was promoted to brigadier general. He then led the second brigade in William Dorsey Penders Division of Hills Third Corps of the Northern Virginia Army during the Battle of Gettysburg .

During this battle he briefly took over the Penders division after being fatally wounded. He was later replaced by Major General Isaac R. Trimble and led his brigade again in "Pickett's Charge" , the unsuccessful infantry attack of the Confederation. A horse was shot away from under him in the battle. He lost nearly 50% of his soldiers during the three day battle. In 1864 he led a brigade during the overland campaign and the siege of Petersburg . On April 2, he was wounded in the Battle of Cold Harbor . In February and March 1865 he commanded Cadmus M. Wilcox 's division. He continued to serve during the Appomattox campaign , after which he was discharged from the army after Robert E. Lee's surrender on April 9, 1865.

Postbellum

Lane became Professor of Civil Engineering and Economics at Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College (VAMC) - (founded in 1872). He died in Auburn, Alabama and was buried there in Pine Hill Cemetery.
