James Lipton (born September 19, 1926 in Detroit , † March 2, 2020 in New York City ) was an American author , talk show host , actor and acting teacher. He became known through his interviews with filmmakers broadcast on television from 1994 to 2018 under the title Ungeschminkt (original title: Inside the Actors Studio ).

biography

Lipton was born in Detroit in 1926. His mother was a teacher, his father the journalist and writer Lawrence Lipton . Lipton was the couple's only child who divorced in the late 1930s. Lipton's career began in the early 1940s when he was involved in radio productions, including voicing the Lone Ranger's nephew . After the Second World War he lived in Paris for a few years .

He returned to the United States and worked as an actor on various television series. In the 50s, 60s and 70s he was a writer on the production of several soap operas , including Springfield Story . In 1967 he worked on a Broadway musical, produced Jimmy Carter's inaugural gala for television in 1977 and several birthday specials for and with Bob Hope, and wrote Barry Manilow's 1985 television film Copacabana .

In the 1990s he became dean of the Actors Studio Drama School, a collaboration between the Actors Studio and New School colleges in New York City . As part of a course offered there, Lipton began interviewing actors, directors and other filmmakers. The recorded interviews Inside the Actors Studio are broadcast in many countries, for example in Central Europe on 3sat under the title Ungeschminkt .

Private

In 1954 he married the actress Nina Foch , the marriage lasted until 1958. He was married to his second wife Kedakai Turner from 1970 onwards. He died of bladder cancer in early March 2020 at the age of 93 .
