James M. Tanner

James Mourilyan Tanner (born August 1, 1920 in Camberley , Surrey , † August 11, 2010 in Wellington , Somerset ) was a British pediatrician . His specialty was auxology . Tanner described the Tanner stages of physical development during puberty, named after him .

Life

James M. Tanner was born in 1920 to a British military man and grew up. a. in Egypt and China. After the death of his older brother in World War II , he rejected the idea of ​​also entering the military. He took up a medical degree that he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania . He completed his specialist training at Johns Hopkins Hospital . Tanner was also a biologist and mathematician. He was a professor at the Institute of Child Health at the University of London . In 1993 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Tanner's first marriage was with Bernice Alture († 1991), his second marriage with the Swede Gunilla Tanner Lindgren. He left a daughter and a stepdaughter and a stepson.

Act

Tanner was the first to expand the scientific study of body growth to include the social environment in which people grow up. In this context he coined the statement of " growth as a mirror of the conditions of society" ( English : "growth as a mirror of the conditions of society" ). The basis of his early work was the Harpenden Growth Study , a longitudinal study that was carried out from 1948 to 1971 in an orphanage in Harpenden . This study provided data from which reference values ​​for height and weight, tables of the expected height of an adolescent during the growth phase and X-rays for the skeletal age determination using the single bone method ("bone-by-bone method") according to Tanner and Whitehouse emerged.
