The James River is a river in the US state of Virginia . It is 660 km long and has a water catchment area of 27,000 km².
The James River is formed by the confluence of the Cowpasture River and the Jackson River in the mountains of the Appalachian Mountains , near the village of Iron Gate . The river flows through Hampton Roads into the Chesapeake Bay .
