James Roland Walter Parker

James Roland Walter Parker , CMG , OBE ( December 20, 1919 - November 17, 2009 in Somerset , England ) was a British diplomat and colonial official who was Governor of the Falkland Islands from 1977 to 1980 .

Life

Parker entered the civil service on December 12, 1936, initially serving in the Department of Labor. He later moved to the Ministry of Affairs of the Commonwealth of Nations ( Commonwealth Office ) and was Deputy High Commissioner in Biafra until 1967 . Because of his services there, he became officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) on January 1, 1968 . On December 8, 1970 he was accepted as a civil servant in the diplomatic service (HM Foreign Service) .

He became Consul General in Durban on May 26, 1976 . On December 30, 1976, he was appointed as the successor to Neville Arthur Irwin French with effect from December 16, 1976 as governor of the Falkland Islands and commander in chief of the British troops stationed there. On February 18, 1977, with effect from February 7, 1977, he was also appointed High Commissioner of the British Antarctic Territory . On January 1, 1978, he was appointed Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (CMG). His successor as Governor of the Falkland Islands was Rex Masterman Hunt in February 1980 .

The Parker Peninsula on Anvers Island in Antarctica is named after him.
