James Anthony Shields (born December 20, 1981 in Newhall , California ) is an American baseball player and pitcher in Major League Baseball (MLB) with the San Diego Padres . He previously played in the MLB for the Tampa Bay Rays from 2006 to 2012 and for the Kansas City Royals in 2013 and 2014 .

Career

Shields was drafted in the 2000 amateur draft by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays . He played his first game in the MLB on May 31, 2006 against the Baltimore Orioles . In his rookie season with the Rays, Shields played relatively inconspicuously. He finished the season with a win-loss of 6 to 8 and an ERA of 4.84.

In the 2007 season, Shields became one of the main pitchers in the Rays rotation alongside Scott Kazmir . He finished the season with a 12–8 with an ERA of 3.85 in 31 inserts. With 184 strikeouts in 215 innings , Shields was one of the best in his league. In the 2008 season he was able to improve some values ​​(14-8, 3.56 ERA in 33 games). In 2009, however, Shields was less successful with 11 wins and 12 losses in 33 games.

In 2008, Shields signed a seven-season contract with the Rays that could bring him up to $ 44 million.

Because of the injury to first pitcher Scott Kazmir, Shields pitched the opening game of the 2008 season for the Rays.

“Bench-Clearing Brawl” on June 5, 2008

Shields was suspended from the league for six games due to his role in a brawl. In the game against the Boston Red Sox on June 5, 2008 , Shields hit Coco Crisp with a hit by pitch . During the subsequent Charging the Mound , Shields tried to punch Crisp with a punch, but it failed. Crisp also tried to beat his opponent. As a result, all the players, managers and supervisors from both teams stormed onto the pitch and a so-called "bench-clearing brawl" ensued. Shields later stated that he tried to protect his teammates and that he believed he was doing the right thing.

World Series 2008

Shields reached the 2008 World Series with the Rays against the Philadelphia Phillies . In Game 2 of the series launched Shields and was able to win in 4: won two of his team victory. It was the only success of the Rays, who lost the series 1: 4.

Shields lives in Las Vegas with wife Ryane and daughter Ashtyn between seasons .

He is a cousin of outfielders Aaron Rowand , who is active with the San Francisco Giants .
