James Sutherland

James Sutherland PC (born July 17, 1849 in Ancaster , Western Canada , now Ontario ; † May 3, 1905 ) was a Canadian Liberal Party politician who was a member of the House of Commons and a minister in the 8th Canadian cabinet of Prime Minister Wilfrid Laurier for over 24 years was.

Life

Sutherland, who worked as a businessman, began his political career in local politics and was first Reeve between 1877 and 1879 and then Mayor of Woodstock in 1880 .

Some time after taking office as Mayor of Woodstock, Sutherland was elected to the House of Commons for the first time on December 9, 1880 as a candidate for the Liberal Party in a by-election in the Ontario constituency of Oxford North , and was part of the House of Commons for more than 24 years until his Death on May 3, 1905.

During his membership in parliament he was between January 1896 and January 1900 First Parliamentary Secretary of the ruling faction (Chief Government Whip ) of the Liberal Party in the lower house and at the same time from September 30, 1899 to January 14, 1902 Minister without Portfolio in the 8th Canadian Cabinet of Prime Ministers Wilfrid Laurier.

After a cabinet reshuffle, he served as Minister for Maritime and Fisheries between January 15 and November 10, 1902 , before becoming Minister for Public Works on November 11, 1902, when the government was reshuffled . He held this position until his death on May 3, 1905.
