James Thomas "Jim" Chapin (born February 27, 1955 in St. Louis , Missouri ) is a former American speed skater .

Chapin competed at the 1972 Junior World Championships in Fredrikstad . In the small four-way battle , he finished 19th after winning the first 500 meter race. In 1973 he was American all-around champion. At the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck , Chapin competed over 500 meters. He finished 10th in the all -around competition of the speed skating sprint world championship in 1978 in Lake Placid , he was eleventh. Chapin's second Winter Olympics was in Lake Placid in 1980 . In the competition over 500 meters, he took 24th place.
