James Isaac Wendell (born September 3, 1890 in Schenectady , New York , † November 22, 1958 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) was an American athlete . He was 1.83 m tall and 79 kg.

He won three IC4A championships:

  • 1912: over 120 y hurdles in 15.6 seconds.
  • 1913: over 120 y hurdles in 15.4 seconds and over 220 y hurdles in 23.6 seconds.

At the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm he won the silver medal in the 110-meter hurdles behind Fred Kelly (gold in 15.1 seconds) and ahead of Martin Hawkins (bronze in 15.3 seconds) in 15.2 seconds . With the exception of the Briton Kenneth Powell , who was last, only Americans were involved in the race.

Wendell was able to place himself in the top ten of the world rankings twice:

  • 1912 4th place (15.2 sec.)
  • 1913 5th place (15.4 sec.)

After completing his career, he became a sports and English teacher at Hill School in Pottstown . From 1928 to 1952 he was the director of this school.

James Wendell was a graduate of Wesleyan University . In 2008 he was inducted into that university's Hall of Fame.
