James Wilson (* around 1866 in Alexandria ; † February 28, 1900 ibid) was a Scottish football goalkeeper .
Career
From 1887 to 1892 Wilson played as a goalkeeper at FC Vale of Leven in his native Alexandria. With the club he reached the Scottish Cup final in 1885 and 1890 , which was lost. He was also part of the squad in six finals for the Dumbartonshire Cup and twice in the final of the Glasgow Merchants Charity Cup . In the 1893/94 season he played for Third Lanark in the Scottish Football League .
Between 1888 and 1891 Wilson completed four international matches for the Scottish national team . He made his debut on March 10, 1888 in a 5-1 win over Wales at Easter Road . The three other games he played all against England . Wilson played several times in trial matches and in 1891 attended a 9-2 win against the English amateur club Corinthian FC . He was also a selection player for Dumbartonshire on several occasions . Regarding his last international appearance in 1891, the Athletic News correspondent stated: "Wilson was serene in goal and held brilliantly, but on a few occasions he made some very risky shots."
Off the field, Wilson was a sniper with the Dunbartonshire Volunteers and participated in the Queen's Hundred national shooting competition . His main occupation was in printing .
He died on 28 February 1900 at the age of 33 years at a pneumonia , he left his wife and several children. An obituary writes about him: "[he] ranks after McAulay as the greatest Scottish goalkeeper."
