James Winter

James Winter (born October 18, 1919 in Minneapolis , Hennepin County , Minnesota , † June 12, 2006 in Fresno , Fresno County , California ) was an American horn player and professor at a music college.

Winter studied at Carleton College , where he graduated with a bachelor's degree. He received a Master of Arts degree from Northwestern University and a Ph. D. from the State University of Iowa . He also served in the US Navy during World War II .

From 1954 to 1987, Winter was principal horn with the Fresno Philharmonic , an orchestra he helped found. From 1980 he was a substitute conductor in this orchestra. From 1970 to 1982 he was also principal horn in Bear Valley.

From 1947 to 1987, Winter was Professor of Horn at the Music Department of California State University in Fresno and also guest lecturer at international horn workshops.

At the International Horn Society , he was an editorial member of The Horn Call from 1972 to 1976 and President of the Society from 1983 to 1986.

Among other things, he composed a suite for a quartet of young horn players. He also published an educational work.
