biography

His exact date of birth is not known, but on May 31, 1622 he was entered in the baptismal register as Jan, son of Abraham Jansz., In the Ouden Kerk in Amsterdam . His father's occupation is given as cooper . Jan married Abrahamsz in 1642. the daughter of Teunis Teunis van Bronckhorst, Magdaleentje Antonis van Bronckhorst. From this marriage the five children Abraham (born 1644), Johannes (1653), Jacobus (1658), Magdalena (1660) and Daniel (1661) emerged. His wife died on April 11, 1665. Shortly after her death, he married the 38-year-old Albertje van Crale from Zwolle . But on July 1, 1666, he himself was buried in the Westerkerk in Amsterdam.

In addition to paintings by Jan Porcellis , Philips Wouwerman , Jan van der Heyden and Pieter de Hooch, the inventory of the estate includes around 150 books as well as 19 large folio volumes, 47 smaller volumes and a few prints bound to books, an astonishingly large library for this period .

In 1649 he lived at the Haarlemertor. In 1651 he bought a house on the Rozengracht from a fellow artist for 3,000 guilders. Since one of his children was baptized in the Ouden Kerk, it is assumed that he lived in the Heerestraat in December 1652, as all other of his children were baptized in the Westerkerk and he is registered as resident again in the Rozengracht in 1665.
