Jan Adamus

Jan Adamus (born March 12, 1896 in Krakow , † June 19, 1962 in Łódź ) was a Polish historian who mainly dealt with the national and legal history of Poland as well as historiography .

Life

Adamus studied law in Vienna and then in Lwów , where he received his doctorate in 1927 under the direction of Przemysław Dąbkowski . From 1924 to 1933 he worked as a research assistant at the University of Lwów . In 1933 he completed his habilitation at Vilnius University . He then headed the City Archives in Vilnius.

After Lithuania and Vilnius had been annexed by the Soviet Union , Adamus was deported to a camp . He was released in 1941 and joined the Polish army, with which he reached the Middle East in 1942 . In 1944 Adamus moved to Great Britain .

In 1947 he returned to Poland and lectured at the University of Łódź from 1949 , where he taught as an associate professor from 1954 and as a full professor from 1958 .
