Jan Betley
Jan Betley (born February 28, 1908 in Płock , † April 3, 1980 in Warsaw ) was a Polish painter and teacher .
Life
Betley attended the Szkoły Sztuk Pięknych and studied from 1930 to 1936 under Tadeusz Pruszkowski at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. In 1936 he passed his exam here with distinction. In 1946 he completed additional training under Felicjan Szczęsny Kowarski . He was a member of the Fourth Group (Polish: "Grupa Czwarta"). From 1948 to 1978 Betley worked at the Faculty of Painting at the Warsaw Academy, first as an assistant and from 1967 as a lecturer . He mainly painted landscapes in oil, with a focus on views from Warsaw, Sandomierz , Płock, Kazimierz Dolny and Bukowina Tatrzańska . He also created portraits, genre paintings and war paintings related to World War II . Originally Betley painted in a realistic style, but from 1970 his paintings became more expressionistic. He was influenced by Polish colorism . Before the war, his works were shown in Poland and in Berlin , London and Stockholm (1936). After the war it was exhibited in Berlin, Geneva , London, Chicago and New York in addition to Poland . Betley won various awards. Pictures of him are in the collections of the National Museum of Warsaw and the Museum of Warsaw .
