Jan Buchwald

Jan Buchwald (born March 29, 1974 in Solingen ; † July 28, 2019 ) was a German opera singer ( baritone ).

Life

The son of a teacher couple already took private singing lessons while still at school and sang to the soprano Martha Mödl , who certified his talent. He first completed a youth degree in Freiburg and then studied with Carl Heinz Müller at the Hanover University of Music (1995) and with Alois Orth in Berlin and Klesie Kelly-Moog in Cologne (1996-2003). He then attended master classes with Norman Shetler , Irwin Gage and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau . In 2000 he received a scholarship for the International Opera Studio of the Hamburg State Opera and moved to Hamburg. During this time Buchwald u. a. the roles of Christiano in Un ballo in maschera , Pantalone in Die Liebe zu den Drei Orangen , Kilian in Der Freischütz , Heerrufers in Lohengrin and Dancairo in Carmen .

Since the 2002/2003 season he has been a lyrical baritone in the ensemble of the Hamburg State Opera . Since then he has a. in the title role of Reinhard Keisers Der ridiculous Prince Jodelet , as Paolo Albiani in Verdi's Simon Boccanegra and in the role of Fritz Kothner in Wagner's Meistersinger von Nürnberg , in which he also appeared at the Bavarian State Opera . Buchwald also sang at the Munich Opera Festival, the Salzburg Festival , the Festival musical di Andaluz (Seville) and made his US debut at the Brahms Festival in Milwaukee in 2006 . In 2008 there was a guest appearance with Alban Berg's Lulu at the Lyric Opera in Chicago.
