biography

Jan was born as the son of the Levant trader Cornelis Jansz Geelvinck (1544-1624) and the Geerte Wiggertsdr Ramp. The Geelvinck family became rich through trade. In 1601 Geelvinck married Griete Govertsdr Wuytiers (1582-1601), who died three years later. Geelvinck had himself portrayed with his first wife by Cornelis van der Voort . He then married Aecht de Vlaming van Oudshoorn (1588–1666). Of the eight children, Maria, married to Willem van Loon , Agatha, who married Frederik Alewijn , Margaretha Geelvinck, the wife of Joan Munter , Eva as the wife of Hendrick Bicker and Cornelis Geelvinck, who married Elisabeth Velecker and Margaretha Bicker. It was through these connections that the Geelvinck family found their way into the high regent circles of Amsterdam.

Geelvinck became Schepen in 1623 and a member of the Amsterdam Vroedschap the following year . In 1626 he was entrusted with the office of mayor instead of his late brother-in-law Jacob Poppen . Another eleven appointments followed until 1647. In 1631 he was a deputy in the field during Friedrich Heinrich von Orange's unsuccessful attack on Flanders. Between 1633 and 1634 he was the Council of the States of Holland . In 1643, together with the regents Albert Burgh , Gerbrand Claesz Pancras and Cornelis de Graeff , he was able to achieve the resignation of the powerful Andries Bicker by appointing him to the Council of the States of Holland. When the influence of the Bicker brothers increased towards the end of the 1640s , Geelvinck was excluded from the mayor's office. In 1650, in the conflict between the regents of Amsterdam and William II of Orange , Hasselaer was entrusted with a message to the prince about the disbanding of the army by the states of Holland.
