Jan Domela

January Domela (* 22. August 1894 in The Hague ; † 1. August 1973 in Santa Monica , California , actually Johan Domela Nieuwenhuis , and Jan Marinus Domela ) was from the Netherlands originating American artist and illustrator .

Career

Jan Domela became interested in art in a Swiss boarding school. He then studied at the Los Angeles School of Illustration and Painting and the Mark Hopkins Art Institute . Back in the Netherlands, he went to the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam in 1925 before finishing his studies at the Académie Julian in Paris .

After Dolema returned to California in 1928, he became chief matte painter at Paramount Studios , where he was chief artist in the special effects department until 1968. He created numerous landscape creations for numerous Paramount films over a period of over 30 years and received several Academy Awards for them .

Domela showed his own landscape paintings with subjects such as the Monterey Peninsula , the Palisades of the Sierra Nevada , the Alps and Monhegan Island at exhibitions, including in the Los Angeles County Museum .
