The conquest of space (original title: Conquest of Space ) is an American science fiction film from 1955 . It was directed by Byron Haskin for Paramount Pictures and is about the first manned flight to Mars. The German premiere took place on July 15, 1955.

In the near future, a huge space station will orbit the earth. On board the station, a group of volunteers is preparing the first flight to the moon. Shortly before take-off, the crew received the order to fly to Mars to look for new sources of raw materials, as these are slowly becoming scarce on Earth. During the flight to the red planet, the commander of the mission suddenly gets moral doubts and decides to prevent a landing on Mars by all means.
