The following year he was given a supporting role as a soldier in the eight Academy Award-winning film classic Damned in All Eternity by Fred Zinnemann , based on the novel by James Jones . In numerous films, Shaughnessy has mostly been cast as a friendlier and more buddy, if not always particularly intelligent, contemporary.

From the 1970s, his film and television appearances were sparse, most recently he mainly appeared with his own show in nightclubs on the US east coast. The science fiction film Primal Scream was released posthumously in 1987 .
Mickey Shaughnessy died of lung cancer in 1985 at Cape May Court House , New Jersey, aged 64 . He was survived by his wife Sarah and seven children.
