Joseph Michael "Mickey" Shaughnessy (born August 5, 1920 in New York City , † July 23, 1985 in Cape May Court House , New Jersey ) was an American actor Irish vote.

Life

Mickey Shaughnessy made his first appearance as a troop comedian while serving in World War II . After the end of the war he appeared in numerous nightclubs. He made his film debut in 1952 in an important supporting role in George Cukor's comedy Happy-End ... and what comes next? at the side of Judy Holliday and Aldo Ray . The following year he was given a supporting role as a soldier in the eight Academy Award-winning film classic Damned in All Eternity by Fred Zinnemann , based on the novel by James Jones . In numerous films, Shaughnessy has mostly been cast as a friendlier and more buddy, if not always particularly intelligent, contemporary.

His best-known roles include Hunk Houghton , Elvis Presley's experienced and patient mentor in Jailhouse Rock - Rhythm Behind Bars , and Maxi Stultz , a dumb ex-middleweight boxer, in Vincente Minnelli's comedy Why Did I Say Yes? . In his later years he took on numerous guest roles in ABC and NBC- produced series such as Maverick and The People of Shiloh Ranch . From the 1970s, his film and television appearances were sparse, most recently he mainly appeared with his own show in nightclubs on the US east coast. The science fiction film Primal Scream was released posthumously in 1987 .

Mickey Shaughnessy died of lung cancer in 1985 at Cape May Court House , New Jersey, aged 64 . He was survived by his wife Sarah and seven children.
