Jan Heller

Jan Heller (born April 22, 1925 in Plzeň , † January 15, 2008 in Prague ) was a Czech Protestant theologian of the Evangelical Church of the Bohemian Brethren and professor of the Old Testament and religious studies .

Life

After obtaining his university entrance qualification, Heller studied Protestant theology in Prague and Basel from 1945 to 1948 . Here he heard lectures from Karl Barth . From 1948 to 1951 he was vicar of the Church of the Bohemian Brethren in Hořovice . As early as 1950 he took over a lectureship at the Evangelical Theological Comenius Faculty and taught Hebrew and religious studies . During this time he submitted his dissertation on an Old Testament topic and was awarded a Dr. theol. PhD. In between he taught from 1966 to 1968 as a visiting professor at the Humboldt University in Berlin (GDR) and at the Church University in Berlin (West) . In 1977 he received a professorship for the Old Testament at the Comenius Faculty, which became part of Charles University after the Velvet Revolution .

After his retirement in 1992, he also gave lectures at the Faculty of Catholic Theology at Charles University.

Heller earned his credit for participating in a Czech ecumenical translation of the Bible . He was a member of the Christian Peace Conference and prepared the 1st All-Christian Peace Assembly in Prague in 1961, in which he participated.
