Jan Hoem

Jan Michael Hoem (born April 17, 1939 in Kristiansund , Norway , † February 25, 2017 in Stockholm ) was a Norwegian population scientist and professor of statistical demography.

Life

Hoem studied actuarial mathematics at the University of Oslo , where he also obtained his M.Sc. 1968 followed the M.Sc. in mathematical statistics , while Hoem worked from 1965 to 1969 as an assistant at the chair for theoretical statistics at the University of Oslo. In 1969 Hoem received his doctorate as Dr. phil. and in 1970 went to the Central Statistical Office of Norway as head of the socio-demographic research unit . From 1974 to 1981 Hoem held a professorship in actuarial mathematics at the University of Copenhagen , which was followed from 1981 to 1999 by the professorship in demometry at the University of Stockholm . In 1999, Hoem was appointed second director by the Max Planck Society at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock , where he set up and headed the Department of Fertility and Family Development in Today's Europe . In 2002 Hoem was appointed honorary professor for statistical demography at the University of Rostock .

In addition to his scientific work beyond his retirement in 2007, Hoem was a member of the Actuarial Association of Norway , the American Statistical Association , the International Statistical Institute , the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population as well as the Scandinavian Demographic Society and the Population Association of America .

Award

In 2006, Jan Hoem was honored as a Laureate 2006 for his scientific activities in the course of his career from the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population .

Works (selection)

Jan Hoem was the author and co-author of numerous publications. His book Basic Concepts of Formal Demography , which became the standard work for introducing demography in Norway, was published by Hoem before his doctorate. His article Purged and partial Markov chains (1969) on Markov chain models became an important treatise in modern actuarial science .
