Jan Hogendijk

Jan Pieter Hogendijk (born July 21, 1955 in Leeuwarden ) is a Dutch mathematician who mainly deals with Islamic mathematics of the Middle Ages .

Life

Hogendijk received his PhD from Utrecht University in 1983 . As a post-doc he was Visiting Assistant Professor at Brown University with David Pingree until 1985 and assistant at the Institute for the History of Science at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main in 1985/86 . Since 1986 he was at the University of Utrecht.

From 2004 to 2009 he was professor for the history of mathematics at the University of Leiden and from 2005 professor for the history of mathematics in Utrecht. He was also adjunct professor at King Fahd University in Dhahran and from 2008 to 2010 at Tehran University .

He also dealt with Gérard Desargues and his connection to Apollonios of Perge .

In 1994 he was invited speaker at the ICM in Zurich ( Mathematics in medieval islamic Spain ). Since 2010 he has been a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences . From 1996 to 1999 he was managing editor of the journal Historia Mathematica .

In 2012 he received the first Otto Neugebauer Prize in Mathematics History from the European Mathematical Society . The laudation emphasized that his work showed how ancient Greek mathematics was received in the medieval Arab world, how it developed there and was finally passed on to Europe.
