life and work

Jan Hubertus was born on the high seas between Holland and Indonesia and grew up in Java under the influence of Buddhist monks . In 1931 he returned to Geertruidenberg with his parents . Hubertus received his artistic training at the Antwerp Art Academy , which he graduated at the age of nineteen. Study visits to Paris and London followed . At the University of Leuven Hubertus took free courses in archeology and art history .

After the war years that Hubertus spent as a soldier and in the Dutch resistance , he traveled through Europe and Africa . During these years, under the influence of the artist group CoBrA , his painting developed towards Abstract Expressionism . In 1956 Hubertus became the second secretary of the Dutch artists' association and thus had a lively exchange with foreign artists. From 1960 he withdrew from the art business and dealt intensively with Eastern ideas.

In 1965 Hubertus met his wife Maria and moved to Switzerland, where his main work was created over the next 30 years. Hubertus lived withdrawn and only painted at night. Further study visits to the Tibet Institute in Rikon and trips to Asia followed . He passed on his knowledge of meditation to other people.

In the sixties and seventies, based on meditative exercises, pictures with calligraphic structures were created. Objects were added in the 1980s, often in combination with wood, stone and written paper. In 1982 parts of the Hubertus works were destroyed in a fire.

Jan Hubertus died while preparing for his exhibition at the Aargauer Kunsthaus , which took place in the spring of 1996.
