Jan Lunze (born January 14, 1952 in Dresden ) is a German engineer and professor for automation technology and process informatics at the Ruhr University in Bochum .

1970–1974 he studied information technology and technical cybernetics at the TU Ilmenau (with Karl Reinisch ). As a graduate engineer , he was a research associate and group leader at the Central Institute for Cybernetics and Information Processes in Dresden from 1974 to 1989 at the Academy of Sciences of the GDR (head: Hans-Joachim Zander ). He received his doctorate in 1980 in Ilmenau with the thesis analysis and design of decentralized controllers with incomplete knowledge of the controlled system and completed his habilitation with the thesis Robust multi-variable control with limited model uncertainty . In 1988 he was appointed professor by the President of the Academy of Sciences Werner Scheler .

In 1990/91 he headed the automation technology department at the Central Institute for Nuclear Research in Rossendorf . In 1992 he was appointed professor for control engineering and head of the institute for control engineering at the Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg and in 2001 at the Ruhr University in Bochum.

As an orienteer , Lunze , who is still starting for the USV TU Dresden , won several medals at GDR championships .

His books "Control engineering 1" (system theory basics, analysis and design of single-loop controls) and "Control engineering 2" (multi-variable systems, digital control) are among the standard works in German-language control engineering literature.

Jan Lunze has been a full member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts since 2008 .
