Karl Reinisch

Karl Reinisch (born August 21, 1921 in Dresden ; † January 24, 2007 in Ilmenau ) was a German electrical engineer and professor of control engineering in Ilmenau. Under his leadership, stable foundations for automation and system technology as components of technical cybernetics were created at the Technical University of Ilmenau . He was also active for many years at the international federation for science and technology of automation and control, the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC).

Life

Karl Reinisch received his Abitur in 1940 and served the next five years in World War II . From 1946 to 1950 studied electrical engineering in the direction of low-voltage technology at the Technical University of Dresden , among others with professors such as Heinrich Barkhausen and Georg Mierdel . The latter convinced Reinisch to deal with control science. Immediately after completing his studies, he became an assistant, later a senior assistant for general electrical engineering, and from 1951 to 1953 had a teaching position in theoretical electrical engineering. He gained further teaching experience in Magdeburg in the field of control engineering, where the establishment of an institute for control engineering, which he supported , was being prepared (commissioner: Heinrich Wilhelmi ).

The dissertation , written by Reinisch in 1957, on the subject of "Structural optimization of linear continuous control loops" is considered the first control technology dissertation in the GDR . In the same year, the German Academy of Sciences (DAW) in Berlin founded an office for "regulation and control technology" in Dresden (head: Heinrich Kindler ). Here Karl Reinisch took over the development and management of the “Electrical Control Systems” department alongside the other two “Non-electrical Control Systems” (Head: Heinz Töpfer ) and “Switching Systems” (Head: Siegfried Pilz ).

In 1960 he was appointed to the University of Electrical Engineering in Ilmenau, later called TH Ilmenau and today's TU Ilmenau , where he developed the new field of control engineering at the Faculty of Low Voltage Technology . In 1965 he completed his habilitation at the TU Dresden and was appointed full professor at the TH Ilmenau in the same year. In 1968 Siegfried Pilz also followed him from the Academy in Dresden to Ilmenau to the chair of information technology, his successor in Dresden was Hans-Joachim Zander .

As part of the university reform in 1968, on the initiative of Karl Reinisch, four institutes were merged in the newly formed section for technical and biomedical cybernetics. He headed the Institute for Control Engineering he set up and the Automatic Control Department that emerged from it in 1968 until his retirement in 1986. His work particularly extended to non-technical systems. In the 1970s he began teaching and researching the dynamics and simulation of ecological systems , as the TU subject area based on it was later named, and which can be assigned to environmental systems science. - In 1987 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the TU Dresden for his achievements .

Even after his retirement, Reinisch was scientifically active. In 1995 he became a full member of the Academy of Charitable Sciences in Erfurt . Until 1996 he held lectures at the Technical University of Ilmenau for the Institute of Automation and System Technology. Numerous professors emerged from Reinisch's circle : Ulrich Engmann, Manfred Günther , Tatjana Lange , Jan Lunze , Rainer Müller , G. Otto, H. Puta, Michael Roth , Josef Sponer, Günter Stein , Jürgen Wernstedt and others

His charisma went far beyond the technical, for example in the ecumenical lecture events he organized on philosophical and religious questions. During the GDR, they took place in the rooms of his parish and brought together representatives of the most varied of directions. During the peaceful revolution of 1989 and thereafter, his advice and participation were in demand on a much larger scale. On January 24, 2007, Karl Reinisch died after a long, serious illness at the age of 85.

Services

Karl Reinisch founded a system-based control engineering school (in the sense of cybernetics according to Norbert Wiener ). The focus of his work was the optimal management of complex processes in decentralized, in particular hierarchical structures with preferred applications in water management (dam control) and in agriculture.

For 15 years he was the representative of the Scientific and Technical Society for Measurement and Automation Technology (WGMA) of the Chamber of Technology in responsible functions of the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC). When he retired in 1986, Reinisch was recognized as an outstanding university professor . From 1989 Karl Reinisch participated in the evaluation and structural transformation of the Technical University of Ilmenau to the Technical University of Ilmenau .
