Jan Mařák

Jan Mařák (born May 2, 1870 in Dunakész , Kingdom of Hungary , † October 21, 1932 in Prague ) was a Czech- Hungarian violinist and teacher .

Life

Mařák's father was Czech, his mother Hungarian. Even as a child he showed great musical talent. In the years 1882–1889 he studied violin at the Prague Conservatory with Antonín Bennewitz . After his training he worked for a short time as concertmaster at the municipal theater in Königsberg . 1892–1897 he was concertmaster at the Prague National Theater.

In 1897 he was appointed professor at the Prague Conservatory. He mainly taught using the Ševčík method. His numerous students include B. the violinists Váša Příhoda , Kitty Červenková , Andreina Paganini (granddaughter of Niccolò Paganini ), Anna Serbousková , concertmaster of the Czech Philharmonic Stanislav Novák or the conductor Václav Talich .

Mařák also became known as the editor of technical studies, writings on violin pedagogy and as an arranger of well-known compositions for the violin; the 10-volume series "Classique et moderne", published by M. Urbánek in Prague. His book on the violin, which deals with its development, the history of violin making and playing the violin, was published three times: 1923, 1941 and 1944.

Mařák was the brother of the opera singer Otakar Mařák and the harpist Jiřina Mařáková-Schulzová and nephew of the painter Julius Mařák .
