Jan Nejedlý (born April 23, 1776 in Žebrák ( German beggars ), † December 31, 1834 in Prague ) was a Czech lawyer, philologist and writer of the national revival .

Life

The younger brother of Vojtěch Nejedlý and member of the poet school of Antonín Jaroslav Puchmajer took over the chair of Czech language and literature at the Charles University in Prague from František Martin Pelcl after completing his training at the Piarist grammar school in Prague . In 1803 he received his doctorate in law.

In 1809 he was appointed state advocate and imperial council and from then on dealt primarily with his lucrative law firm. When the new generation of patriots around Josef Jungmann grew up, he sided with the conservative opponents. Eventually he slowed down the Czech rebirth and delayed the further development of the Czech language and literature.

Works

Nejedly wrote a grammar book of the Czech language ( Practical Bohemian Grammar ), published the magazine Hlasatel český , in which famous Czech authors published their works. He also wrote poems, epigrams, newspaper articles and worked as a translator. Among other things, he translated works from the Greek ( Iliad von Homer ), French, English and German.
