Jan Peter Bechtluft

Jan Peter Bechtluft (* 3. April 1971 in Georgsmarienhütte ) is a German local politician of the CDU . Since 2006 he has been the mayor of the city of Papenburg in the Emsland district .

Life

Bechtluft was born in the town of Georgsmarienhütte in the Osnabrück district and grew up in Twist (Emsland) . There he attended elementary school and passed his Abitur in 1990 at the Gymnasium Marianum in Meppen . He then took up law studies at the Universities of Osnabrück and in Leiden in the Netherlands , with a focus on administrative, labor and European law. After taking the first state examination in law in 1996, he did his community service in the Haus Ledenhof nursing home in Osnabrück and in 1999, after completing his legal clerkship at the Oldenburg Higher Regional Court , also passed the second state examination in law. After graduating, he received a teaching position at the Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences in the administrative management department.

In 2001 he took up the post of legal advisor and department head for environment, law and order at the city of Papenburg. Since completing a part-time further education course in administrative management at the Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences, he has been a business graduate (FH) since 2006 . Bechtluft has been married to a primary school teacher since 1996. Together they are parents of three sons. Since 2002 he has been lecturer in the St. Antonius parish in Papenburg. In his spare time, he jogs and goes to rock concerts.

Political career

In 2006 Bechtluft ran for the office of mayor of the city of Papenburg. As a non-party candidate at the time, he was supported by the CDU. After the first ballot, the office of mayor was elected. His first term of office began on September 1, 2006. His re-entry into the CDU, a year after taking office, brought him criticism. After his first term in office, he stood for re-election in 2014. In it he competed against the candidates of the SPD and Alliance 90 / The Greens , Jürgen Broer and Nikolaus Schütte. He also won this election with 54.37% of the vote in the first ballot. In November 2019 it was announced that he would not run for a third term starting in 2021.
