Jan Rinke

Jan Frederik Rinke (born March 27, 1863 in Schildwolde in the municipality of Midden-Groningen , † May 20, 1922 in The Hague ) was a Dutch painter, etcher, lithographer, illustrator, bookbinder, and art teacher.

Between 1899 and 1902 Jan Rinke studied at the Art Academy in Amsterdam . He worked for several years as a teacher in Rotterdam , where he met the later children's book author Chris van Abkoude (1880-1960) and from 1908 illustrated his children's books for the Kluitman publishing house.

He illustrated the first two volumes by Chris van Abkoude from the “ Pietje Bell ” series and the book “Jaap Snoek van Volendam”. In the latter book he appears as the painter Breedevoorde. He also worked as a book designer, for the Kluitman publishing house in Alkmaar, he designed dozens of books. Scheltens & Giltay published “Young Holland on Skates”, a large-format book (24 × 55 cm) in which figures could be cut out and erected into a winter landscape.

Rinke lived and worked in Amsterdam, Blaricum , The Hague , Laren and Volendam , and also abroad in London , Berlin , Belgium and Tyrol .
