biography

Jan Six is the son of the Amsterdam art collector and draftsman Jan Six X van Hillegom and his wife Annebelle Dresselhuys. He grew up as a member of the Six family from the age of eleven on Amsterdam's Herengracht 218 in the house that houses the Collectie Six . The furnishings of the house include numerous works of art that formed the environment of the adolescent Jan Six and prevented him from bringing classmates home with him. The works of art meant nothing to him at first, but at the age of sixteen he began to be interested in them and occasionally took visitors through the house. The works of art in the Collectie Six include two paintings by Rembrandt: a portrait of a woman, possibly Anna Wijmer, and a portrait of Jan Six .

After completing his school education, Six studied two semesters at the Reinwardt Academie in Amsterdam and then art history and archeology at the Universiteit van Amsterdam . In 2000 he became the curator of Collectie Six. From 2004 to 2006 Six worked at Sotheby’s in London. From 2006 to 2012 he worked in the Amsterdam office of Sotheby's, where he became head of the Old Masters Department in 2007 . In 2009, Six started his own art business.

Discovery of several paintings by Rembrandt

"Laughing Rembrandt" (2007)

In October 2007, Six reportedly advised a customer of Sotheby's who was interested in a painting at a small auction house in Cirencester, England, with an estimate of £ 1,000. Six recognized Rembrandt's self-portrait in the painting and advised the customer accordingly. The following day the painting, The Laughing Rembrandt , sold for £ 2.2 million.

"Let the Children Come to Me" (2014)

On May 17, 2014, the Lempertz auction house in Cologne sold the painting Let the children come to me as a work by an unknown successor to Rembrandt. The painting, valued at 15,000 to 18,000 euros, was acquired for 1,508,000 euros (including buyer's premium of 1,829,800 euros) from an initially unknown bidder. In the late summer of 2018, Six went public with the announcement that he had bought the painting with the help of an unnamed investor. The circulating rumors about a newly discovered Rembrandt would have caused him to give up the originally planned secrecy until the restoration of the painting was completed.

"Portrait of a Young Man" (2016)

In December 2016 Six acquired by an investor at an auction of Old Masters of the London auction house Christie's , the portrait of a young man for 137,000 British pounds. The estimated price of the portrait, which Christie's attributed to Rembrandt's circle, was £ 15,000 to £ 20,000. Six first noticed that the portrait can be dated to around 1634 because of the special shape of the collar. At that time, however, there was no circle around Rembrandt, who was still unknown in Amsterdam. Further research led Six to purchase the painting.
