Jan Swart van Groningen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jan Swart van Groningen (* 1500 in Groningen , † after 1562 in Antwerp ) was a Dutch painter and wood cutter .

Life

Swart van Groningen is said to have also worked under the name Jan Vredemann . In 1522 a Jan Swart from Groningen worked in Gouda , but this was probably the painter Jan Swart (1469–1535), who had returned in 1522 after a stay in Italy and died in Gouda. There could be a mixture of both artists here, since both were referred to as Jan Swart van Groningen.

Swart van Groningen later went to Antwerp, where he also died. His work shows some familiarity with the style of the Italian High Renaissance . Most of the woodcuts in the Dutch Bible edition of 1528, which was published in Antwerp, are from him.

Works

In the Arenberg Archive, Enghien, Belgium there is a small travel altar by Jan Swart van Groningen, the only picture by the artist that is signed and dated: Jan de Svaert alias van Groeningen mefecit A 1562 , which overturns previous research. The triptych shows a crucifixion (crucifix after an engraving by Giulio Bonasone ) with Mary and John on the central panel in the early Baroque style . On the side panels of the founders Francisco are left de Verdugo with by one of Federico Barocci modeled figure composition of Sts. Francis and on the right wing the wife of Francisco Dorothe von Mansfeld with a St. Dorothea depicted. The signature is on the back of the central panel and the family coats of arms of the donors are on the back side panels.
