Jan Twardowski (born June 1, 1915 in Warsaw , † January 18, 2006 ibid) was a Polish poet , religious educator and Catholic priest .

Life

After attending grammar school in Warsaw, Twardowski passed the Abitur examination in 1936 . A year later, his first volume of poetry, Powrót Andersena (Andersen's Return), was published, which was based on the poetry of the group of poets Skamander around Julian Tuwim . In the same year he began studying Polish at the University of Warsaw , which he was not able to complete until 1947 due to the interruption of the war . During the Second World War , in which all of his earlier works and manuscripts were lost, he fought as a soldier in the Polish Home Army (Armia Krajowa), a. a. in the Warsaw Uprising .

After the war, he decided to become a priest, began to study theology and received in 1948 the ordination . He then worked for many years as provost at the Warsaw Visitant Church of St. Joseph and began to write poetry again, which found a wide audience, especially through the weekly newspaper Tygodnik Powszechny . Twardowski is (along with Pope John Paul II ) one of the most important representatives of religious poetry in Poland. He published a number of volumes of poetry that achieved unusually high print runs. His poems speak of God as well as man and nature.

At the request of the children, he received the international award as Cavalier of the Order of Smiles .
