Jan Vrba (born January 28, 1982 in Jablonec nad Nisou ) is a Czech bobsledder . He was still a pusher from 2004 to 2005 and has been a pilot since the 2006/07 season .

Career

Vrba, who started for the Izoprosper bob club and was trained by Václav Puš , made his international debut as Pavel Puškár's pusher in the four-man bobsleigh on December 12, 2004 as part of the Bobsleigh World Cup in Nagano . After finishing 28th there, he reached 19th place with the four-man bobsleigh in St. Moritz in January. From winter 2006/07 Vrba started in the European Bobsleigh Cup with his own two-man and four-man bobsleigh as a pilot. In February 2007 he made his pilot debut at the World Cup in Winterberg . As 13th, he ended up only in midfield and then stayed in the European Cup.

At the Junior World Championship in Innsbruck in 2008 , Vrba came in 22nd in the two-man bobsleigh and 15th in the four-man bobsleigh. From the winter of 2008/09 he received another starting place in the World Cup. Most of the time he only finished in the lower midfield. At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , Vrba only started with the four-man bobsleigh and came in 16th.

On January 23, 2011, he finished in tenth place in the top 10 for the first time in Winterberg. At his first bobsleigh world championships in 2012 in Lake Placid , he was 18th in the two-man bobsleigh with his pusher Jan Stokláska . In the four-man bobsleigh he finished 13th with Vladimír Hladík , Jan Stokláska and Martin Bohmann . On December 6, 2012, Vrba won the NorAm Cup in Calgary in the two-man bobsleigh , after finishing second in the first race. He was also able to win the four other races. In January he again achieved two top 10 placements in Altenberg, with fifth place in the second race being his best individual result in the World Cup to date.

At the 2013 Bobsleigh World Championships in St. Moritz, he reached 16th place in the two-man and 12th place in the four-man bobsleigh. A year later he started after a rather mediocre World Cup season at the age of 32 at his second Olympic Games in Sochi . After 24th place in the two-man bobsleigh, a 14th place in the four-man bobsleigh followed. For the 2014/15 season Vrba started again firmly in the European Cup. It was not until January 2015 that it was used again in the World Cup in Altenberg, but missed the top 10 in both disciplines. In the following World Cup in St. Moritz, he was able to get back into the top 10 at least in tenth in the four-man bobsleigh. He also achieved this tenth place at the following Bobsleigh World Championship in 2015 . In the two-man bobsleigh, he had only finished 29th before. After more mediocre World Cup placements, Vrba went back to the European Cup. On February 6, 2016, he finished 19th (27th in the World Cup rankings) in the two-man bobsleigh at the World Cup in St. Moritz, which was also rated as the 2016 European Bobsleigh Championship, with his pusher Jakub Havlín . At the 2016 Bobsleigh World Championships in Innsbruck he only started in the two-man bobsleigh with his pusher Jakub Nosek , but did not start for race three.

After some good results in the European Cup, Vrba came back to the World Cup in January 2017, but could not convince again. At the 2017 Bobsleigh World Championships at Königssee he was only 30th for him and push-puller Dominik Suchý . In the four-man bobsleigh, he finished 18th with his pushers. In February 2018, the now 42-year-old Vrba started again at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang . He was 23rd in the two-man bobsleigh with Jakub Havlín before he finished 24th in the four-man bobsleigh with Dominik Suchý, Jan Stokláska and David Egydy . For the 2018/19 season, Vrba got another starting place in the European Cup, but played his last race in mid-December 2018.
