Janno Reiljan

Janno Reiljan (born October 8, 1951 in the rural municipality of Rõuge ; † January 23, 2018 ) was an Estonian economist and politician.

Economist

Janno Reiljan grew up in southern Estonia. Until 1970 he attended school in Võru . He graduated from the Faculty of Economics at Tartu State University in 1975 . In 1980 he obtained the title of candidate of science at Moscow State University with an economics doctoral thesis. In 1991 he defended his doctoral thesis at the University of Tartu. From 1991 Reiljan taught at the University of Tartu. From 1993 to 1996 he was the dean of the Faculty of Economics in Tartu .

A scholarship from the Volkswagen Foundation brought Janno Reiljan to the Kiel Institute for the World Economy in 1993/1994 . From November 1994 to February 1995 he was visiting professor at the University of Münster . In 1996/1997 Janno Reiljan spent a research stay at the University of Leipzig with a DAAD scholarship . From 1992 to 1999 he was a member of the University Council of the University of Tartu.

Politician

When Estonian independence was regained, Janno Reiljan also became politically active. From 1992 he worked as an advisor to the Estonian Prime Minister. He joined the rural Estonian People's Union (Rahvaliit) . Together with his younger brother Villu Reiljan (* 1953), who headed the party from 2000 to 2007, Janno Reiljan was one of the rhetorically outstanding leaders of the party.

From 1999 to 2007 Janno Reiljan was a member of the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ) for three legislative terms as a member. In the 2007 general election , in which the People's Union suffered losses, he missed his return to parliament.

From April 24, 2003 to April 30, 2004, Reiljan was an observer in the European Parliament . When the Republic of Estonia joined the European Union , Reiljan was a member of the European Parliament from May 1, 2004 to July 19, 2004. He belonged to the " Union for Europe of Nations " group.

After leaving the Estonian Parliament, Reiljan was again active as an economics professor.

Private life

Janno Reiljan was married three times. In 2006 he married his longtime partner, the pianist Siiri Reiljan.
