Janusz Krupski (born May 9, 1951 in Lublin , † April 10, 2010 in Smolensk , Russia ) was a Polish historian and dissident in the People's Republic of Poland . He is counted among the pioneers of the independent publishing industry in the times of the former People's Republic .

Life

From 1970 to 1975 Krupski studied history at the Catholic University in Lublin . In 1976 he joined the Club of Catholic Intelligence in Warsaw . From 1977 to 1988 he edited the underground weekly Spotkania .

In 1980 Krupski was a member of the Solidarność Regional Board in Gdansk . He was harassed several times for his work and suffered repression by the secret security service Służba Bezpieczeństwa . So he was interned in the time of the state of emergency . After his release, three functionaries of the independent secret service group Samodzielna Grupa "D" Departamentu IV MSW kidnapped him on January 21, 1983 to a forest in the Kampinos National Park , near the village of Truskav , where he was burned with caustic liquid and, as a result, burns of the first and second degree suffered.

From 1990 to 1992 Krupski headed the Editions Spotkania publishing house . 1992–1995 he was a member of the Sejm's special commission to investigate the consequences of the state of emergency in Poland and of the commission for constitutional responsibility. Since 1993 he has been running his own publishing house Krupski i S-ka . From 2000 to 2006 Krupski was Deputy President of the Institute for National Remembrance (Instytut Pamięci Narodowej , short IPN). Since May 19, 2006 he headed the Office for War Veterans and Oppressed Persons (Urząd do spraw Kombatantów i Osób Represjonowanych).

Krupski lived in Grodzisk Mazowiecki in the Masovian Voivodeship . He was a member of the Association of Free Word (Stowarzyszenie Wolnego Słowa) based in Warsaw, an association of artists, journalists, printers and publishers who worked underground in the former People's Republic of Poland .

On April 10, 2010, Janusz Krupski was part of the Polish delegation led by President Lech Kaczyński , who traveled to the memorial in Russia on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre . He and other high-ranking state representatives from Poland were killed in the plane crash near Smolensk . He left a wife and seven children.

Posthumously on April 16, 2010 he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta (Krzyż Wielki Orderu Odrodzenia Polski) .
