The Japanese pond rose ( Nuphar japonica ) is a species of the water lily family (Nymphaeaceae). In Japan it is known as Kōhone or Kawahone ( 河 骨 , 川 骨 ).
features
The Japanese pond rose is a perennial aquatic plant with a rhizome that grows in water depths of 50 to 80 centimeters. The floating leaf blade is more than 2.5 times as long as it is wide, narrowly ovate to elongated and measures 20 to 40 × 5 to 12 centimeters. The flowers are 4 to 8 centimeters in diameter. The nectar leaves are about 8 millimeters long. The scar disc has about 11 rays.
Flowering time is from July to August.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 34.
Occurrence
The Japanese pond rose, also called Japanese pond mummel , is found in Japan in lakes, ponds and shallow water areas of rivers. They can be found in Korea, Honshu, Kyushu, Shikoku and in southwestern Hokkaido. There is also a cultivated form called the red pond rose ( Nuphar japonica var. Rubrotincta ).

The Japanese pond rose is widely used as an ornamental plant in garden ponds and (as a rubrotincta variety ) as an aquarium plant.
