The Japanese loosestrife ( Lysimachia japonica ) is a species of the genus loosestrife ( Lysimachia ).
features
The Japanese loosestrife is an aboveground runners-forming, perennial, herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 10 to 30 cm. The stem is clearly hairy. The leaves are opposite. The leaf blade measures 1 to 3 × 0.8 to 2 centimeters and is broadly ovate, dotted with glandular dots and has a short tip. The flowers are arranged individually and five-fold. The flower stalk is up to 10 millimeters long. The calyx tips are linear-lanceolate and clearly hairy. The crown is yellow. The corolla lobes are egg-shaped and about 5 millimeters long.
The flowering period extends from May to June.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 18, 20 or 22.
Occurrence
The Japanese loosestrife is found in Japan, South and Central China, Taiwan, Korea and Malaysia on shady banks and in moist forests at altitudes up to 2130 meters.
Systematics
The variety Lysimachia japonica var. Minutissima Masam. has obovate corolla lobes. Their leaf blades measure 0.2 to 0.5 × 0.2 to 0.5 centimeters.
