Place name
The place name is derived from the Fazenda Jardim , which was on the territory of the present city, and the river Rio Piranhas , on the banks of which it was located.
history
The families Esmeraldo , Cavalcante and Oliveira lived on the Fazenda Jardim in the area of today's municipality . Margarida Cardoso Cavalcante donated the land of the parish church Nossa Senhora de Santana in Caicó from the inheritance of her family in 1874 . On October 18th, Father João Maria Cavalcante celebrated his first mass here. Today is considered the city's founding date. The pastor built a small chapel, the Capela de Nossa Senhora dos Aflitos . Today there is a church of the same name here.
On December 23, 1948, Jardim de Piranhas was separated from Caicó as an independent municipality.
