The Jardin des Plantes (French; German: plant garden ) is a botanical garden in Paris with an area of ​​23.5 hectares . It is located in the southeast of the city, on the southern bank of the Seine in the 5th arrondissement between the Paris mosque and the "Jussieu" scientific faculty .

history

The garden, which was laid out in 1626 and opened to the public as Jardin du roi in 1635, is the oldest part of the important national research and educational institute for natural sciences, Muséum national d'histoire naturelle , which was founded in 1793. It is bounded by the institute's areas of activity, including several exhibition buildings such as the Grande Galerie de l'Évolution , the Galerie de Paléontologie et d'Anatomie Comparée and the Ménagerie du Jardin des Plantes , the only Paris zoo within the ring road ( Boulevard périphérique ).

This zoo came into being as a result of the French Revolution : According to a resolution from 1793, the exotic animals of private showmen were either assigned to the remains of the Versailles menagerie or slaughtered and given to the naturalists of the Jardin des Plantes for stuffing. The latter let the animals live. Even after the opening of the new zoo in the Bois de Vincennes (1934), the Jardin des Plantes Zoo is still an attractive place to spend your free time.

The garden was originally named Jardin royal des plantes médicinales (royal medicinal herb garden ) by the royal personal physicians of Louis XIII. , Jean Héroard (1551–1628) and Guy de La Brosse . Directors included Antoine Vallot (1652–1671), personal physician to Louis XIV, Guy-Crescent Fagon (1693) and Georges-Louis Leclerc de Buffon (1739), who expanded the park.
