Bohumil Markalous (1923)

Bohumil Markalous (pseudonym Jaromír John ) (born April 16, 1882 in Klatovy , † April 24, 1952 in Jaroměř ) was a Czech writer , journalist , university professor , art esthete and critic.

Life

Markalous attended high school in Chrudim until 1900 , then began studying natural sciences in Prague and Innsbruck . In 1910 he taught at the secondary school for girls in Hradec Králové . In 1915 he had to enter and fought in the Balkans in the First World War . In 1916 he fell ill with dysentery in Albania and his legs were paralyzed. After the war he started as an editor at Lidové noviny in 1919 , later joined the Devětsil Writers ' Union and Group 42 and wrote for the newspapers Bytová kultura (home decor ) and Pestrý týden ( Colorful Week ). From 1923 to 1928 he taught cultural history at the Technical University in Brno and worked in the government's press department. In 1928 he retired and devoted himself entirely to the publication of the magazine "Pestrý týden". From 1938 he lived in Slatiňany , from 1942 together with the writer Helena Šmahelová . In 1946 he was appointed to the Palacký University in Olomouc , where he founded the Aesthetics Department and headed it until his death.

Works

His work is influenced by the Moderní revue . At the beginning he wrote short stories, later novels and short stories.
