Jaroslav Dobrovolský
Jaroslav Dobrovolský (born October 5, 1895 in Lužice u Hodonína ; † April 27, 1942 in Mauthausen concentration camp ) was a Czech teacher, painter, graphic artist, and politician.
Life
Dobrovolský came from a working class family. After graduating from high school in Hodonín in 1913 , he wanted to devote himself to the teaching profession, but was prevented from doing so by the outbreak of the First World War . After the end of the war he taught in various places, including 1920 in his native Lužice until he settled in Hodonín in 1929, where he taught until 1939 and was elected mayor in 1935. His last place of work as a teacher was Moravská Ostrava (Moravian Ostrava) before he was appointed school inspector.
After the occupation of the country by the Wehrmacht , Dobrovolský decided to participate in the illegal resistance against the German occupiers. He joined the resistance organization Obrana národa (Defense of the Nation), which was the largest and most important resistance organization in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia at the beginning of the Second World War . In September 1940, Dobrovolský was arrested with numerous other resistance fighters. He was held briefly in prisons in Ratiboř u Vsetína , Olomouc and Brno until he was sentenced on October 15, 1940 and sent to the Mauthausen concentration camp - with the notorious note “RU” (return undesirable) in his file.
In Mauthausen concentration camp he was obliged to work in the quarry. He fell ill, his legs froze to death, and suffered from poisoning and severe malnutrition. Dobrovolský died on April 27, 1942.
Art, works and exhibitions
Dobrovolský made particular use of wood and linocut techniques and etching. As a rule, he made his patterns as series on various topics, such as about the cities "Pressburg", "Hodonín", "Břeclav" and "Ostrau", furthermore "TG Masaryk's birthplace", "On the blue Adriatic" and other. A total of 147 woodcuts and linocuts are known.
The second area of his artistic activity was book graphics. He illustrated various books such as "Jižní Morava v písních Petra Bezruče" (South Moravia in the chants of Petr Bezruč ). In addition, he designed artistic bookplate ex-libris , which he exhibited at numerous exhibitions a. a. showed in the USA, Australia, Belgium, Hungary and the Soviet Union. In 1936 he was appointed chairman of the Czechoslovak delegation to the ex-libris exhibition in Los Angeles.
As a painter he became known with watercolors and oil paintings.
